The Kongo Cosmogram, or Dikenga, is an ancestral symbol of the Bakongo people of Central Africa. It represents existence as a continuous cycle of birth, growth, transformation, ancestry, and rebirth.
O Cosmograma Kongo, ou Dikenga, é um símbolo ancestral do povo Bakongo, da África Central. Ele representa a existência como um ciclo contínuo de nascimento, crescimento, transformação, ancestralidade e renascimento.

The sun rises. It represents the beginning, discovery, and the seed of something new.

We chose the Kongo Cosmogram as the symbol of this year’s Ponto de Cultura because it expresses a fundamental idea: to know where we are going, we must recognize where we came from, understand where we are today, and prepare what we will leave for those who come after us.
Escolhemos o Cosmograma Kongo como símbolo do Ponto de Cultura deste ano porque ele expressa uma ideia fundamental: para saber para onde vamos, precisamos reconhecer de onde viemos, compreender onde estamos e preparar aquilo que deixaremos para quem virá depois de nós.
The same is true of Capoeira. We receive a legacy from our ancestors and mestres, transform that knowledge through our own experiences, and carry the responsibility of passing it on to future generations.

O COSMOGRAMA BAKONGO constituiu um dos símbolos filosóficos mais importantes do pensamento da África Central. Conhecido como Cosmograma Kongo ou Dikenga, ele representa o ciclo da vida. Os quatro pontos marcam a passagem do sol e as etapas da existência: nascimento, vida, morte e retorno espiritual. Durante séculos, o símbolo orientou as ideias do povo Bakongo sobre o tempo, o conhecimento e a continuidade humana. Ele mostra como a filosofia era expressa não apenas por meio da escrita, mas também por meio da cosmologia visual.
The BAKONGO COSMOGRAM formed one of the most important philosophical symbols in Central African thought. Known as the Kongo Cosmogram or Dikenga, It represents the cycle of life. The four points mark the passage of the sun and the stages of existence, birth, life, death, and spiritual return. For centuries, the symbol guided the Bakongo people's ideas about time, knowledge, and human continuity. It shows how philosophy was expressed not only through writing, but through visual cosmology.
